His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the
Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the 29th of his line,
which dates back to the fourteenth century. He ascended the Throne in
1967. Besides being the Sultan and the Ruler, he is concurrently the
Prime Minister, Defence and Finance Minister, and head of the religion
of Brunei Darussalam. He is considered to be one of the wealthiest
people in the world. His official residence is the Royal Palace Istana
Nurul Iman, which is also the country’s seat of administration.

grow in this region of deep shade and 100% humidity. The floor is covered
with a litter of rapidly decomposing vegetation and organisms that break
down into usable nutrients. There is heavy competition for these nutrients
among animals and fungi and many trees are shallow-rooted.

Rainforest canopy. This is the primary layer of the rainforest, which
rises to 45m. This green shield filters out 80% of the light, preventing
its transmission to the forest below. Photosynthesis is everywhere.
Flowers and fruits abound and many animals that live here often never
touch the ground during their lifetime.

Al-Marhum Sultan Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien III (1914-1986), the 28th
ruler of Brunei. He ruled from 1950 to 1967 and is regarded as the
architect of the modern Brunei. Misai Kucing (java tea) flowers at
center. Back: The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque in
Bandar Seri Begawan. Built in 1958, it sits on an artificial lagoon. The
52-meter tall golden-domed structure has Italian marble floors and
walls. The mosque is the largest in the Far East and is considered to be
among the most beautiful in the world. A stone replica of a 16th-century
barge rests in the Brunei River in the front of the mosque.
