In China, many local businesses and large factories issued their own local money or coupons, which could be spent at that business or factory. Some of these coupons could be used in exchange for a specific item, such as a piece of chicken or a kilo of rice. Other coupons had a nominal value in Chinese Yuan and could be used in exchange for a variety of items. Coupons belonging to this latter category (coupons denominated in Chinese Yuan) are presented here. Throughout China, thousands of such coupons circulated, mostly in the 1980s. Most coupons were printed on paper, only a smaller number on plastic. Some of these plastic coupons are presented here.
