On the withdrawal of 2,000 Lei bank note

Pursuant to the provisions of Art. 18 of Law No. 312/2004 on the Statute of the National Bank of Romania, the central bank shall withdraw from circulation the polymer-based banknote with face value of ROL 2,000 - year of issue 1999, as of 1 September 2004.

After 30 November 2004, the above-mentioned banknote ceases to be legal tender.

The withdrawal of the polymer-based banknote with face value of ROL 2,000 - year of issue 1999, shall be carried out as follows:

Between 1 September - 31 October 2004, the banknote shall be received as means of payment by all economic agents, as well as by other institutions, including commercial banks, which shall not put it into circulation again, but deposit it with the banks where they have their accounts opened.

Between 1 - 30 November 2004, the banknote shall be received as means of payment or for exchange purposes by banks only. Commercial banks shall not put it into circulation again, but deposit it with the National Bank of Romania.

After 30 November 2004, the polymer-based banknote with face value of ROL 2,000 - year of issue 1999 ceases to be legal tender. Therefore, commercial banks shall no longer receive or exchange it.

Between 1 December 2004 - 31 March 2005, the polymer-based banknote with face value of ROL 2,000 - year of issue 1999, which ceased to be legal tender as of 30 November 2004, may be exchanged only by the National Bank of Romania branches - in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi and Timişoara.
