Last year, the Brunei Currency and Monetary Board (BCMB) marked the birthday of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam with the launch of two new polymer notes namely the B$50 and B$100. The release of these high denomination banknotes complete the family of commonly used circulating banknotes on polymer designed and printed by Note Printing Australia (NPA). Polymer banknote technology was introduced to Brunei in 1996 with the issue of B$1, B$5 and B$10 banknotes in the same year. The designing of the banknotes requires integration of aesthetic and design elements to reflect the culture of the country combined with critically important security features to keep counterfeiters at bay. The Brunei B$50 and B$100 polymer banknotes showcase the printer's expertise in marrying substrate features harmoniously with the traditional sheet printed features.

The notes were submitted to the 22nd National Print Awards which recognises the excellence in the craft of printing in Australia and acts as a forum to award the best works to lift the standard of work of printers for worldwide recognition. In April, NPA informed BCMB that both notes were awarded gold medal in the category of security printing. The print awards night was held in Melbourne on 25 May 2005 and Mr. Haji Ali Apong, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Finance together with Mr. Pengiran Haji Hashim Pengiran Haji Jadid, Head of Mint, Gallery and Marketing of BCMB were present to witness the achievement.
