Serial number varieties. Three different serial number varieties were produced.

Certain notes were issued as a collectors' issue in folders with red serial numbers (S1R1). It would appear, however, that the red ink used for serial numbers was unstable as some serial numbers appear orange (this is an error version of S1R1). This change appeared on a significant number of notes. See Error bank notes for scans. Many serial numbers show both red and orange colours and it is sometimes difficult to differentiate between the two colours.

Regular issue notes were issued with black serial numbers and two varieties are known: one digit in serial number prefix denominator (S1R2) and two digits in serial number prefix denominator (S1R3).

Bank notes are signed by the Minister of Finance, Chandrika Kumaratunga, and the Governor, A. S. Jayawardana (in office from 1995 to 2004).
