Kuwait, 1 Dinar, issued in 1993. Not a legal tender. Issued in commemoration of the Second Anniversary of the Liberation Day. The sovereignty of the State of Kuwait was restored, following the Iraqi occupation, on the 26th of February 1991. The liberation of Kuwait was achieved by the 34 countries of the United-Nations-sponsored Allied Coalition, all named on the front of the note. Front: A map of Kuwait at centre and the Coat of Arms of Kuwait at top right. Back: Burning oil wells at left and the Seif Palace, the Amir’s administrative headquarters at centre. Scenes of joyous reunion and celebration after the liberation at right.

The three brown dots found at the centre-right on the obverse are actually three Kuwaiti islands (Kubbar, Qaruk and Umm Al-Maradin from North to South). While the main off-shore island of Failakka is clearly shown in colours conforming with the mainland, the three lesser islands seem to be added later, as a separate printing process.

The Central Bank of Kuwait, in commemoration of the Second Anniversary of Liberation Day is issuing this special and Commemorative note at the nominal value of One Kuwaiti Dinar.

On the 26th of February 1991, the sovereignty of the State of Kuwait was restored and the people of Kuwait were freed of the tyrannical occupation. Thereby, the legitimate government has resumed its duties towards the reconstruction, progress and prosperity of the country.

The liberation of Kuwait was achieved by the grace of God and through the tireless efforts and the sacrifice made by courageous men and women coupled with the unprecedented alliance of 34 countries who supported the just Kuwaiti cause.

This special Note has been issued to express gratitude and appreciation for the sacrifices and support which culminated in the liberation of Kuwait. This Note also serves as a reminder of the devastation inflicted on Kuwait under occupation, in particular the human suffering and the environmental tragedy.

Sadly, innocent men, women, and children remain captive in the aggressor’s prisons.

We will continue to work, along with the international community towards freeing these hostages. We will not rest or cease our efforts until every single person has returned safely to their homeland, family and friends.

[Description below from the issue folder.]

In commemoration of the Tenth Anniversary of Kuwait's Liberation Day, the 26th February 2001, the Central Bank of Kuwait has issued a Commemorative Note at the nominal value of One Kuwaiti Dinar, not as legal currency. This Commemorative Note signifies the cycle of development and progress after the liberation of Kuwait, restoring to their normal levels the social and economic activities of pre-invasion Kuwait. It is also a token of the Kuwaiti people's rejoicing for the day of victory and liberation. The celebration of the Liberation Day always reminds us of the Grace of God granted on the 26th February 1991, when Kuwait was liberated from the hostile Iraqi occupation. With the devastation and plunder of our property and resources, the occupation inflicted great damage, caused complete cessation of our capacities, and destroyed social and economic aspirations all over our beloved country.

The Tenth Liberation Day—like all other liberation days—also reminds us of the strong perserverance and will evidenced by us during the treacherous Iraqi occupation, and of the sublime manifestation of sacrifice made by our martyrs, whose blood was shed for their dear homeland. On the occasion of the liberation, we shall not forget to commend all effective assistance and support offered from the peoples and governments of 34 brotherly and friendly countries, and international organizations as well.

We shall always pray to Allah the Almighty for protection of Kuwait against all adversity, for compassion for our martyrs and for the prompt release of our POWs.
