Guatemala, 1 Quetzal, issued in 2007. Various Maya patterns appear throughout the bank note. Front: José María Orellana Pinto (1872-1926), a politician, general and President of Guatemala from 1921 to 1926. During his presidential term, the Quetzal as the Guatemalan currency unit was created. Back: At left, a plate of Leyden, a jade statue with the oldest dated Maya writing. In the centre, building of the Central Bank of Guatemala. At centre right, an engraved stone altar of Tikal, which was one of the largest cultural and population centres of the Maya civilization, reaching its apogee during the Classic Period, from ca. 200 to 900 AD.
