At a press conference held by the State Bank of Vietnam in Hanoi on August 17, SBV governor Le Duc Thuy said that the SBV is to issue more Australian polymer-based banknotes from September to prevent counterfeiting that are markedly more sophisticated.

The increasing incidence of fake banknotes in the market, of which 100,000 dong is now the favoured choice, is the reason the SBV will introduce 100,000 dong banknotes produced in Australia from September 1. After the successful launch in December last year of 50,000 and 500,000 dong polymer notes and the re-issuance of coins that had not been minted for nearly 20 years, the SBV said.

On August 5, prime minister Phan Van Khai signed Decision 841 to permit the SBV to issue the new note of 100,000 dong and also order the central bank to announce the issuance of the new notes about 10-15 days before it comes in full circulation.
