The central bank said it had discovered counterfeit 50,000-dong notes circulating in Hanoi and the northern provinces of Ha Nam and Lang Son. Governor Le Duc Thuy told a press briefing in Hanoi on Friday that the fake notes were detected in the Hanoi-based Cau Giay and Thanh Tri branches of the Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam (Agribank), and the Ha Nam branch of the bank. They were made from cotton paper rather than polymer, Thuy said. Their colors and figure prints are almost the same as the genuine notes, but the fake notes are easy to be torn apart and do not glow red under ultraviolet light. The central bank introduced the polymer-based 50,000-dong bills since 2003 and few people are vigilant over the forgery of these notes, especially at night or when they are inserted between the Real McCoy, Thuy said. However, Thuy assured that there was no need to be so anxious because there had been a small sum found to be faked and they could be recognized easily.
