The State Bank of Vietnam on November 27 announced the introduction of coins after an absence of 20 years and new polymer banknotes printed in Australia using anti-counterfeit technology.
Scheduled for introduction from December 17, central bank governor Le Duc Thuy is quoted as saying a certain amount of polymer banknotes are being printed by an Australian company on a trial basis until Vietnamese workers gain sufficient experience and the required technology to print this type of special banknotes themselves. In the future, all banknotes will be printed in Vietnam.
Concerning coins, Thuy said a company in Europe is minting the coins but in the near future, the SBV will mint the coins in Vietnam.
