Vietnam will likely in the future use polymer material instead of cotton for producing bank notes, with the successful introduction of newly designed, polymerised money on December 17, said vice governor of the central bank (SBV) Phung Khac Ke.
Ke also disclosed the SBV will introduce more new money coins with different face values, including 500 dong and 2,000 dong to diversify the need of automated payment in the future. The key reason for using polymerised bank notes, according to Ke, is that it can help prevent being counterfeited (which is now common with cotton-made money with 50,000 and 100,000 face value).
Another reason is that there is now only a company in Australia, Securency, that is supplying material for producing polymer banknotes.
