Commercial banks in Vietnam have requested the country’s banking authorities to consider replacing 10,000 and 20,000 dong paper notes with polymer.

Top banking officials made the request to the State Bank of Vietnam, the country’s central bank, at a meeting on Wednesday.

Bankers said VND10,000 and VND20,000 notes were in short supply, causing difficulties.

Vietnam first launched polymer currency notes in 2003 in two dominations, VND50,000 and VND500,000. A year later, VND100,000 polymer bills were issued.
