The launch of the $100 currency note "marks an important evolution in Fiji's monetary system", the President, Ratu Josefa Iloilo said yesterday.
Launching the new highest denomination bank note and unveiling what will be a new series of currency notes for the country, Ratu Josefa called on everyone in Fiji to work together to restore economic growth.
Ratu Josefa said a lot was being said about the Fiji economy and one theme that came through loud and clear was that there were major challenges ahead. In addition to introducing the $100 note, the central bank unveiled new designs for the $2, $5, $10 and $50 notes now in circulation.
Ratu Josefa said the introduction of the $100 note follows the introduction of the $50 in 1995 and showed that the country's economy was developing. Ratu Josefa said the pride of the series on the $100 note goes to tourism.
He said the industry had been the major driver of the economy and the industry held the key to "our economic recovery and offers much potential for the future".
Ratu Josefa said the new design series would continue the tradition of local themes, reflecting the country, culture and the economy.
