Paper or plastic, what size, please?

2005

In order to save on costs, and to stem rapid deterioration, Colombia's Banco de la República will reduce the size of its 1,000 pesos banknote. Gerardo Hernandez, Executive Manager announced that this change will take place in the next quarter.

The new banknote will have the same characteristics as the one currently circulating, only the size will change. The Bank has discarded the possibility of minting the 1,000 peso coins again.

The bank is also looking at the printing polymer banknotes possibly as early as the beginning of next year once their new printing facilities are operating. They also plan to conduct a careful review of the polymer notes used by Mexico and Chile.

The printing higher denominations like the 100,000 peso note has been discarded based on the fact that, after only 4 years in production, the 50,000 peso banknote has become widely used and accepted.
